Ohio Land

The buckeye state encompasses 28.6 million acres, just over 44,825 square miles. Located in the midwest region of the United States, part of its border is Lake Eerie to the north. Neighboring states include Michigan to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the east, and Indiana to the west.

The state takes its name from the Ohio River, which traces its name to an Iroquoian Indian word meaning “great water.” Ohio became the 17th state of the union in 1803. Today, the state comprises 88 counties.

It’s nicknamed the Buckeye State in honor of the number of buckeye trees. The state flower is the carnation widely cultivated for its fringe-petaled flowers, which often have a spicy fragrance and is used extensively in the floral industry. The state bird is the cardinal.

Columbus is the capital and the largest city. On the southern shore of Lake Erie, Cleveland is the second largest.
